Salon is considered to be one of the “icons” from the Champagne area. Recognized as the original “Blanc de Blancs” Champagne, it’s only produced in exceptional vintages and made from a single grape variety: Chardonnay.
The grapes are coming from their own parcel “Le Jardin de Salon” (1 Ha), situated behind the house in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and from 19 selected parcels (total of 9 Ha) owned by other growers. Champagne Salon was founded in 1905 by Eugène Aimé Salon. He was unhappy with the quality of most Champagnes served to him, so he decided to produce his own Champagne according to his taste.
In the beginning, Salon was only produced for personal consumption. Only 42 vintages were released since the first commercial release in 1921 (of the vintage 1905). In 1928 Salon became the “house-Champagne” of Maxim’s in Paris and therefore quickly the favorite of the elite.
The “Salon Blanc de Blancs Cuvée S” can be described as pure, elegant, vital, refined, complex with a lot of minerals and vinous. The quality and style of the wine has been very stable throughout the years and each vintage released is capable of decades of bottle ageing. Only 60.000 – 70.000 bottles are produced and in certain vintages only 30.000 bottles were released, so this Champagne is extremely rare and valuable.
The house was sold in 1988 (together with Delamotte) to the “Groupe Laurent-Perrier”. The vintages (42) released until now are: 1905, 1909, 1911, 1914, 1921, 1925, 1928, 1934, 1937, 1942, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1959, 1961, 1964, 1966, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013. Salon vintages are usually released after 10 - 15 years or more.
