Olivier Bernstein is a “micro négociant” and wine grower situated in the heart of the city of Beaune. He produced his first wines in 2007, but they immediately received great reviews from Jancis Robinson MW, and Allen Meadows.
Bernstein mainly produces wines from the Pinot Noir Grape, with the exception of Meursault 1er Cru “Les Charmes” and the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Champ Gain” (both Chardonnay). All of his wines are of Premier and Grand Cru level.
Olivier comes from a family of music publishers but decided to study oenologie in Beaune. He started to work at Domaine Emmanuel Rouget and met the legendary Henri Jayer. He then moved to Roussillon to establish his own domaine “Mas de la Deveze”. In 2007 he returned to Burgundy to start his négociant business.
He was able to purchase selected grapes from various sources each year and he is now managing all the vineyard work for almost all of his sources. Furthermore, in 2012, he was able to buy 2 plots of vineyards he has worked with since the beginning: Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru “Les Champeaux”.
His portfolio contains wines from the very best wine growing areas of Burgundy: Chambertin Grand Cru, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru and the aforementioned Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru. Olivier Bernstein uses new oak barrels, crafted by master cooper Stéphane Chassin. Stéphane first tastes the new vintage before deciding the degree of toasting for each individual wine. Each wine is bottled by hand. The total production is very limited and highly sought after.
