The best wines from Steiermark

Styria, also known as Steiermark, is recognized as one of Europe's most remarkable wine regions with its large array of different grape varieties and wines. Styria has a long history of winemaking and produces quality wines for ages. The last decades, the Steiermark region has undergone a quality increase, as winemakers embraced more modern winemaking techniques while still respecting traditional methods. The resurgence in Steiermark was recognized by winelovers all over the world.

Welschriesling is the primary grape variety in Steiermark, with each region showing its specialty in creating wines from this grape. Remarkable wines are produced, like Schilcher Rosé in the west, wines from Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller in the south, and Traminer in the southeast. Other white wines, made from Muskateller with its typical aromas, Pinot Blanc with mineral notes, and the full-bodied Chardonnay (local name Morillon), are characterized by their unique reflection of its terroir.

The region is world-renowned for its outstanding Sauvignon Blancs, like the wines produced by Weingut Sabathi. And Pinot grape family enthusiasts can find some beautiful full-bodied wines from lime-rich soils, offering refined minerality. Wines made from Chardonnay, or Morillon, are full-bodied with exceptional freshness and aging potential.

Classifications of Steiermark wines

In 2018, three of Steiermark wine growing regions received DAC accreditation. These three areas have diverse terroir compositions and use different grapes as many are restricted in a certain area. The regions are as follows:

  1. Südsteiermark displays a picturesque landscape. This landscape that is adorned with rolling hills and pine trees features notably Sauvignon Blanc as the primary grape variety. Certain vineyard wines in good years have gained collector's status. It's ideal for Traminer and Sauvignon Blanc due to rocky limestone and clay soils. Welschriesling is the most grown grape.
  2. Sud-Oststeiermark also be named as Vulkanland Steiermark, sits on volcanic slopes with various grape varieties, notably the Traminer near Klöch. The rules for this area are like Süsteiermark, allowing the same grape varieties. The principle grape varieties in the area are Welschrisling, Weißburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer. There are some excellent Sauvignon Blanc wines due to high altitudes and limestone soils.
  3. Weststeiermark lies in the West of Steiermark, where the Blauer Wildbacher grape is grown, well known for its Schilcher wines. They are renowned for their pronounced acidity and unique character and have a dedicated following, particularly for its sparkling variation. This DAC, known as Schilcherland, is also famous for its traditional rosé. It also produces wines from Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, and a few other white grapes.
