Lochea Ploughing Edition First Crop: A Daring and Refined Whisky Experience

Lochea Distillery is one of the most charming new distilleries that bottle delicious and playful whiskies. The Lochea Ploughing Edition marks the first, lightly peated variety of this amazing dram.

The distillery is located in one of the buildings at Lochlea Farm, making it a true "farm distillery." Here, barley is sown and harvested on their own land. The barley is malted on the malting floor in one of the barns (which is not common for most distilleries), and the resulting "wort" is eventually distilled in their own stills to spirit. Of course, the casks mature on the farm in their own warehouses until the whisky is ready to be bottled.

Fun fact: The farm where Robert Burns grew up long ago is Lochlea Farm.

In 2021, John Campbell became the new Distillery Manager. Prior to this role, John spent 27 years at Laphroaig on Islay, with the last 16 years as senior distillery manager. He is well aware of the effect that former Laphroaig casks have on the maturation of the Lochlea spirit.

Lochea Ploughing Edition - First Crop
A warming and smoky version of Lochlea single malt, matured in ex-Islay barrels and peated quarter casks. The color of the label represents the icy winters on the plains of Ayrshire.

Nose: Stewed fruit with pear tart, Chanel No. 5, hints of grass, and freshly sawn oak beams. Light peat smoke.

Taste: Old-fashioned fruit drops with apple pie and roasted almond nuts. Light peat influences in every nook and cranny of the palate.

Finish: Wonderfully fruity, nutty, and warming, with a veil of Islay peat.
