Lochlea is one of the nicest new distilleries that bottle very tasty and playfull whiskies. The Lochlea Plowing Edition is the first, lightly peated variety of this awesome dram..
Lochlea Distillery is built in one of the Lochlea Farm buildings. A real "Farm distillery" in other words; where the barley is sown and harvest at their own farm land.
The barley is malted on the malt floor in in one of the barns (doesn’t apply to most distilleries) and the resulting "wort" is finally distilled an step away at premises in their own stills to spirit. And of course the casks are maturing at site in the farm's own warehouses until the whisky is ready to be bottled.
Just so you know, the site of the farm where Robert Burns grew up long ago is the lochlea farm.
In 2021, John Campbell became the new Distillery Manager. Prior to this, John spent 27 years at Laphroaig on Islay, the last 16 of which as senior distillery manager. He’s well aware of the effect of former Laphroaig casks has on the maturation of the Lochlea spirit.
Lochlea Plowing Edition 1st Crop
A warming and smoky version of Lochlea single malt using Refill-Islay casks and peated quarter casks. The color of the label represents the icy winters on the plains of Ayrshire.
Nose: Stewed fruit with pear tart, Chanel No. 5, inlaid grass and freshly sawn oak beams. Light peat smoke.
Taste: Old-fashioned fruit drops with apple pie and roasted almond nuts. Light peat influences in every nook and cranny on the palate.
Finish: Wonderfully fruity, nutty and warming, with a veil of Islay peat.
