Glenury Royal 36 Years Old 1968: A Rare Gem from Scotland's Past
In the world of single malt Scotch whisky, few names evoke the mystique and allure of closed distilleries like Glenury Royal. Situated in the picturesque town of Stonehaven, Scotland, this distillery, also known as Glenury Royal, had a rich and storied history that spanned nearly two centuries. Although its doors closed for the final time in 1985, its legacy lives on through exceptional releases like the Glenury Royal 36 Years Old 1968, which was bottled in 2005 as part of Diageo's Special Releases 2005. With only 2,100 bottles produced, this whisky is a testament to the craftsmanship and tradition of a bygone era.
A Brief History
Glenury Royal's origins trace back to 1825 when it was founded by Robert Barclay, taking its name from the glen that meandered through the Ury district. Unfortunately, the distillery faced early setbacks, including a devastating fire shortly after its opening, which destroyed barley stocks, the kiln, and parts of the malting floor. Tragedy struck again when an accident claimed the life of a distillery worker named James Clark.
After Robert Barclay's death in 1854, the distillery changed hands and was auctioned off to William Richie in 1857. Over the years, Glenury Royal passed through several owners, each contributing to its unique character and heritage.
In 1968, a pivotal moment occurred when the maltings at Glenury Royal were closed, signaling a shift in production methods. The distillery continued to produce malt whisky for almost two more decades before it was mothballed in May 1985. It was a bittersweet end to an illustrious journey.
In 1992, the decision was made to cease malt whisky production at Glenury Royal permanently. The distillery buildings were subsequently sold to a property company in 1993, which transformed part of them into apartments.

The Glenury Royal 36 Years Old 1968, released by Diageo in 2005, stands as a rare testament to the distillery's legacy. With an impressive 51.2% ABV, this expression was limited to just 2,100 bottles, making it a highly sought-after collector's item among whisky enthusiasts.
