Bottled in 2013, the 1981 Rivesaltes from Riveyrac (the brand name given to Philippe Gayral to use for his bottling), has a refugent mahogany colour. It has a potent nose: rose-hip, stewed fig and a sprinkle of nutmeg. The palate is nicely balanced with cloves and a continuation of that nutmeg theme, although it feels a little dry and austere throughout the second half, perhaps just a little anonymous compared to some of Gayral's other bottlings, but it does benefit from aeration and reveals a lovely orange peel and tangy marmalade finish.
Pale ruby. Sweet and a tad simple and grating. But with excellent vitality. Long and rich.
