The PX Solera 1918 is the oldest solera at Ximénez-Spínola, only 195 barrels. Each year less than 10,000 bottles are drawn annually. The average age of the wine in bottle is approximately 15 years.
This is a Pedro Ximénez de pasas, a wine made from sun-dried grapes. The grapes undergo a 21-day drying process known as soleo, which significantly concentrates their sugars. As a result, the yield is extremely low—around 200 liters of must from 1,000 kilograms of grapes—equivalent to at least 4 kilograms of grapes per bottle, excluding losses due to evaporation (merma). The wine has a residual sugar content of roughly 350–400 grams per liter.
It is a beautiful PX Solera: very thick and concentrated, sweetness of caramel, dried figs, almonds, hazelnuts. Crispy fruit elements, sugar and acidity almost perfectly balanced. What a treat!
