La Rogerie's Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru 2022 is a dry white from one of Alsace's steep granite Grand Cru sites, and it comes from a year that tested those vineyards hard. Sommerberg took hail in August 2022. The season itself was warm and dry from the start, with France recording its driest July since 1959. Well-drained granite and sandstone slopes felt that dryness most; limestone and marl sites had it easier. Rain arrived at the beginning of September and got ripening moving again, with still-wine harvest starting around 5 September under healthy conditions.
What that produced in Riesling across Alsace was concentration and a fine phenolic grip, with acidities lower than 2021 but plenty of brightness left. Yields were decent, though below average. Alcohol levels run higher than in the vintage that followed.
Practical bit: the 2022s are rich enough to drink young, and this one will also keep. Serve around 10 to 12°C.
