Skaliekop Chenin Blanc 2024 is a dry white wine from the Swartland and South Africa regions, made by David & Nadia from a single old-vine parcel that is difficult to farm. The grapes harvested from Skaliekop possess the flavors of yellow-fleshed stone fruits, with a phenolic astringency reminiscent of peach skin rather than sweetness. Harvested early, the wine has a completely dry finish, and its texture is shaped by the lees rather than by sugar or excessive extraction.
Throughout the Cape region, 2024 presented significant challenges for growers. Budbreak was uneven, vine growth was irregular, inland areas experienced spring frosts, coastal regions were hit by strong winds, and a heatwave struck in the latter part of the season. Yields were low in nearly all regions due to reduced fruit set caused by winds during the flowering period. However, the 2024 vintage white wines displayed clarity and a sleek structure, and the year is generally regarded as one that achieved a harmonious balance of power.

The David & Nadia 2024 Swartland Skaliekop Chenin Blanc comes from a 1.4-hectare vineyard planted in 1985 on shale with underlying clay, ("skaliekop" refers to a "shale hill"). One of five verified heritage sites farmed by the estate, it is harvested in up to eight separate pickings to understand the parcel’s many hidden nuances. The northwest-facing slope promotes warmth, while clay retains moisture and supports mid-season ripening. Compared to Plat’bos, Skaliekop shows more stone fruit development and a broader textural frame. The shale-based soils contribute phenolic structure and layered complexity, resulting in a gorgeous and expressive Chenin Blanc that feels a little more immediate at this young stage.

Grapefruit, jackfruit, honey and crushed stones on the nose. Full-bodied and focused with a fantastic combination of fresh, chalky minerality and fruit. Lots of phenolic tension too. Very long and tightly wound. From a vineyard in the Paardeberg, planted in 1985. Drink or hold. 1,750 bottles produced.

The 2024 Chenin Blanc Skaliekop comes from shale soils on the Paardeberg. It has an elegant bouquet with lanolin and light pressed yellow flower scents. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, a textural Chenin with a pithy, enticing finish. One of those Chenins that grow on you.
