The 2011 Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey has a very primal nose with dried pineapple, beeswax, a touch of sea spray and wet stone. The palate is medium-bodied with a harmonious, viscous entry and very well-judged acidity that lends tension and poise. There is something more effortless about this 2011 compared to recent vintages, with a tang of marmalade popping up on the finish that is very elegant. Excellent.
Packs in a range of tropical and orchard fruits, with mango and papaya notes flirting with quince, yellow apple and creamed peach details. Delivers singed brioche and almond cream accents on the finish, which sports a youthfully raw edge. Should be very solid when it settles in.
A dense, sweet wine with dried pineapple, papaya and honey. Full body, very sweet and fresh. Spicy, botrytis character. Almost waxy undertone. Solid wine.
Tasted blind. Just a little mousey on the nose. Solid concentration of fruit and good tension. But still embryonic. Hint of something burnt on the finish – impressively long.
The 2011 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is one of the recent gems from the estate and should not be ignored. It offers a pure, engaging bouquet of orange zest, canned pineapple, almond and petrichor aromas that burst from the glass. It may be a little more closed compared to when I last tasted it. The palate is beautifully balanced and very harmonious; this 2011 is built around tension and energy. Maybe it pulls up a little short in terms of length, but otherwise this is a very assured and classy Lafaurie-Peyraguey in the making. Tasted from an ex-château bottle sent to my home.
Rene Gabriel rates this wine 19/20 points.
Medium yellow gold, silver reflections. Delicate notes of ripe pineapple and blossom honey with fine wood spice, attractive style. Elegant and balanced, white tropical fruit, wood on the palate, subtle honey on the finish, good precision, already approachable, has further ageing potential.
Spicy and dry, this ripe wine is as much about structure as sweetness at this stage. It is dense, packed with acidity and fragrant acacia and wildflower honey. As it opens up, it brings out orange zest and perfumed acidity.
