Time for another Littlemill, this time by one of my favourite independent bottlers, Cadenhead. This one is from their Small Batch-series, which means it is a vatting of two, three or sometimes even four casks. In theory this means that a flaw in one of the casks, could be masked or balanced out by one of the other casks used for this release. It should make for a more balanced whisky.
Littlemill 1992/2014 (53,7%, Cadenhead, 558 bts.)
Nose: Grassy, mostly dried, but also a little of moist grass. Some old wet oak as well. The fruit arrives after a couple of minutes. Green apples and white grapes. Buttery.
Taste: Oily mouth feel. Spicy with black pepper and cloves. Followed by lemon, raspberry and grapefruit. Nice balance, and slightly drying.
Finish: Hint of chocolate, some pineapple. Lovely creamy.
Rating: 90
Nice balance, rich flavours and attractive aroma’s. Not much more you can ask for.
Cadenhead's tasting notes:
Nose
A little oily to begin with but leave for a few minutes to open up or add a small drop of water at room temperature. As it opens this becomes a classic old style Littlemill with lots of cream and lemony notes with warm buttered brown bread toast, some faint eucalyptus with hot buttered sweetcorn.
Palate
Much bigger than the nose suggests but very rich and fruity. Some brambles with lychees and hints of fresh basil, some spice coriander and dry vermouth. This dram coats the whole palate with an abundance of flavours.
Finish
The finish goes on and on delivering more of the nose and palate with the rich oily feel and some waxy fruitiness. Quite remarkable that this is a lowland it's feeling much bigger than that.
