Most people who have tasted this Almaviva Puente Alto 1997, are unsure when asked to pinpoint the origin, and equally confused about the vintage. They estimated that this wine was far younger than it actually is. One of our tasters entered this wine into a blind tasting to enjoy with friends, and they were astonished at the wine’s age. It was fully mature, but nobody had guessed it was this old.
It is no surprise that people would hesitate trying to place this wine. Almaviva is the result of a cooperation between Rothschild and Concha y Toro, a winemaker from Chile. The supervision and expertise of Rothschild is very clearly noticeable in the process of making Almaviva. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, and Cabernet Franc, this wine shows hints of sweet tobacco, roast figs, a ripe sweetness of plums and berries, and cedar. It is a beautiful wine, and nicely balanced as one can expect under the guidance of Rothschild.
