It sounds like a contradiction in terms, but this amazing dry riesling has a touch of sauvignon blanc on the nose and a touch of traminer on the medium-bodied palate. Brimming with yellow stone fruit, but it’s also wonderfully cool and dynamic. Very racy and expressive finish in which warm and cool notes are beautifully intertwined. Limited production. Drink or hold.
The 2024 Riesling Wintricher Geierslay GW, made in stainless steel only, has a frisson of passion fruit that eases into juicy yellow peach. The palate is poised, slender, pure and linear. It has lovely drive and a kind of salty, slaty energy, beautifully bundled and bright. The 2024 is so racy, refreshing and taut. It is simply gorgeous. (Bone-dry)
The 2024er Wintricher Geierslay Riesling “GW” is a bone-dry wine (with 3 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked on 65-year-old vines which was fermented and aged in stainless steel. It delivers a beautifully fresh and spicy nose of minty herbs, aniseed, gooseberry, lime, violet, white peach, and spearmint, all wrapped in a blanket of smoke. The wine starts off on a nicely juicy and slightly fruity side on the palate, yet firms up as ripe zesty acidity joins the party. The finish is taut, herbal, and still quite tart at this early stage, while the aftertaste is slightly broader and powerful. This Geierslay “GW” will require a few years to reveal its finesse.
