A totally awesome expression of Mosel riesling that’s enormously concentrated and precise. Somehow this still manages to be medium-bodied, but don’t be deceived by that, because it has supernatural energy that drives it forward. Unbelievably long and refined finish in spite of the almost savage minerality. Very limited production from almost 100-year-old vines. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.
The 2024 Riesling Piesporter Treppchen v.d.T., where the abbreviation stands for von den Terrassen, was picked not from the usual three but two terraces. Steinmetz replanted one terrace due to phylloxera, so only 500 liters were made. Gentle savor depicts lichen, stone and saltiness on the nose. The bone-dry palate is compact but so clean-cut and crystalline. Lemon takes center stage and comes with beautiful zestiness that unites with salty slate to drive it forward. The 2024 takes no prisoners, it is all stony precision and drive. (Bone-dry)
The 2024er Piesporter Treppchen Riesling “V.d.T.” is a bone-dry wine (with 2 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked on 90-year-old vines from 3 of the highest and steep parcels in the “vor dem Berg” sector of the vineyard situated just next to the Wintricher hill which was fermented and aged in stainless steel. It offers a beautifully delicate and complex nose of yellow flowers, minty herbs, almond cream, greengage, violet, thyme, and laurel. The wine also proves very elegant and graceful on the palate, and its fine juicy and fresh side slowly gives way to focus and energy in the very long and superbly well-delineated finish. The aftertaste has some tickly and spicy acidity. This great Treppchen “V.d.T.” beautifully combines freshness, elegance, and energy.
