Robert Parker (94)

The 2023 Chardonnay Extra Tan Maresh Vineyard was harvested late, after around 30% of the fruit had been affected by botrytis. “It was rain, sun, rain, sun, so if you had fruit, you could stretch deep into October,” proprietor and winemaker Jim Maresh explains. “A lot of whites were getting cool botrytis development.” It’s an unusual style with exotic scents of candied peaches, apple pastry, honey and saffron. Fermented to dryness, the palate is concentrated and honeyed with ultra spicy flavors, fresh acidity and a very long, textural finish. Reminiscent of Alsace in style, it will be a great addition to the table over the winter holidays.

James Suckling (97)

This bone-dry chardonnay is crafted from cluster selection at Maresh Vineyard, with 50% of the grapes affected by botrytis, yet the influence remains subtle and clean. A broad spectrum of aromatics, with pink nectarines, white cherries and white pepper lifting from the glass. Big yet weightless, with a cloudy, almost ethereal presence. Structured, with subtle tannins and a solid mineral backbone. Long and massive, yet never heavy, with extra layers of depth. From old-vine Wente clone planted in 1983. Drink or hold.

Vinous (96)

The 2023 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard Extra Tan calls to the taster from the glass with vivid apricot, minty herbs and green melon, complicated by masses of flinty crushed stone. It is wickedly fresh, with liquid rocks, depths of ripe pit fruits and sweet spice, all supported by a wave of fresh acidity. Rich yet intense and energetic, the 2023 leaves a saline concentration, nuances of lemon and an airy freshness. I am floored by the balance here.
