Wines from Argiano

Argiano

Argiano is a renowned and historically significant winery in the Montalcino region. The name Argiano is believed to have originated from the Roman times, either from the god Janus, known as "Ara Janus," or from the River Orcia, known as "Orgia."

The winery's history dates back to the 16th century when the noble Pecci family from Siena took over the Tolomei family's declining estate and built the magnificent Bell'Aria villa, a perfect example of a 16th century noble residence. This marked a turning point for Argiano, as the Pecci family also built the cellar, giving birth to the winemaking industry.

Over the centuries, Argiano changed hands and was managed by various noble families until Lady Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli took over and promoted Argiano's products in cultural gatherings. In 1992, the estate passed to Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano, who brought in world-famous oenologist Giacomo Tachis and created Solengo, a great Supertuscan of Montalcino.

Today, Argiano practices organic and sustainable agriculture, focusing on soil fertility and biodiversity. They use natural products like weeds, chestnut tannins, propolis, and zeolite to maintain balance.

The vineyards are located on a south-facing limestone plateau, and the grapes are hand-harvested and aged for 3 years in oak barrels. In 2019, Argiano became the first plastic-free winery in Montalcino, eliminating all single-use plastics and implementing a cyclical waste model.
