The exotic, tremendously extracted 1997 Barolo La Serra reveals overripe characteristics of jammy cassis, black cherries, toasty new oak, and cigar smoke. Huge, massive, and thick, with considerable fatness and a boat load of glycerin, this wine seems more forward than I believe it will actually turn out to be. There is considerable tannin in the 45-second finish, but it is sweet and well-integrated. I suspect by the time it is in bottle, the tannin will be more noticeable, and give the wine the structure and backbone to last 20+ years.
