Bunnahabhain

The Bunnahabhain Distillery is situated on the northeastern coast of Islay. A location of stunning beauty and historical roots, fronting the neighboring Jura island. The Bunnahabhain core-range offers a diverse series of single malt whiskies, such as the delightful Bunnahabhain 12 years old and the Bunnahabhain 18 years old, rewarded with 90 out of a 100 points by international reviewer Serge Valentin. One of the distillery’s most sought-after exclusive editions is the Bunnahabhain 40 Years Old Feis Ile, a treat among whisky collectors!

Bunnahabhain (pronounced as “Bu-na-ha-ven”) is an Anglicization of the Gaelic Bun na h-Abbhaine, which stands for “Mouth of the River”: referring to the Magdalene River which water is used for the production of the Bunnahabhain spirit. Islay is a whisky region well-known for its distinctive heavily peated single malt, which makes Bunnahabhain Single Malt a stranger in the midst for its light and smooth unpeated tasting spirits. The Bunnahabhain Distillery uses unpeated Concerto Malted- or Optic barley, with the exception of the Bunnahabhain Moine, which is kilned for its more characteristic peated variants.

The Bunnahabhain Distillery was officially founded by two farming brothers named Greenlees, in a partnership between, among others, William Ford & Sons. In a cooperation agreement they formed the Islay Distilling & Co. Ltd. and established the Bunnahabhain Distillery in 1883. Like many Scottish distilleries, Bunnahabhain remained closed during the economic recession, but continued its operations after seven years. The Bunnahabhain Distillery is currently owned by Burn Stewart Distillers, who acquired the distillery in 2003 from the Edrington Group.

The Bunnahabhain Distillery remained its loyalty to its traditional distillery methods, despite the criticism the distillery had to deal with for being such an a-typical Islay whisky. And after all, this just might be the reason why Bunnahabhain really continues his legacy!
