Foursquare Principia is a rum distilled in 2008, aged initially for three years in bourbon casks and then for six years in sherry casks. Bottled at cask strength in 2017, this rum is a collaboration with Velier and is a limited edition of 5,400 bottles. Velier, founded in Genoa by Casimir Chaix in 1947, began as a small family-run business specializing in the import and distribution of wine and spirits. In 1986, Luca Gargano, a former Saint James representative and avid rum collector, acquired Velier. He started bottling whisky in 1992 and rum in 1996. Following his renowned bottlings of Demerara rum (Guyana) and Caroni (Trinidad), Gargano expanded his exploration of Caribbean rums to include Barbados, Jamaica, Haiti, and Marie-Galante. Rums selected by Velier are always aged in a tropical climate, contributing to their concentration and significant angel’s share, and are typically bottled at cask strength or just below.
