Another new wine from Arnaldo Caprai, the 2016 Pinot Nero Malcompare comes in a very heavy bottle—presumably to mark its special status, as Umbrian Pinot Noir seems very uncommon indeed. You'll encounter lots of big red fruit but will be hard pressed to recognize the variety in this concentrated and large-scale wine. To the palate, this Pinot Nero is silky and smooth, and you do sense the oak here. Expect the unfamiliar. I tasted number 3,049 of 3,259 bottles made.
Part of Arnaldo Caprai's Signature Range, this Pinot Noir is from a north-facing vineyard situated between two woods, providing a cool micro-climate for the temperamental variety. Matured for 24 months in barriques and at least eight months in bottle, it has delicate aromas of red fruits and raspberry leaf, leading to a fine-grained palate of ripe, structured red fruits and chocolatey tannins. It balances ripeness and freshness, and showcases the fruit on an elegant palate with a tight-knit, drying finish with some barrel influence. A solid yet elegant Pinot that needs more time in bottle.
