The 2001 Barolo San Giovanni is young. Here, too, the fairly high percentage of new oak (55-60%) has given the wine much of its textural richness, while the fruit remains very primary. Today there is little in the way of tertiary aromatic complexity. The 2001 remains a big, fruit-driven Barolo that could use another few years in bottle.
A wine with licorice and raisin character and hints of cedar. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and a berry aftertaste. Long and juicy. Stylish and serious.
