The 2001 Terra di Lavoro is a stunning wine that is enjoying a most peaceful and positive evolution today. It delivers a level of complexity and elegance that puts it in a class of its own. The bouquet exhibits tertiary aromas of smoke, ash, licorice, cured meat and dried fruit. Those aromas show a fluid quality that is backed by energy and momentum. Wait a few moments and dried herbs, rosemary and mint rise from the glass. It shows a silky, elongated quality in the mouth with fine tannins and extra long persistency. Given how well this wine is holding up, it still has a long way to go.
This is an extraordinary wine. It first smells like rubber, turning to intense minerals, blackberries and cherries. Full-bodied, with ultra fine silky tannins and a long, long finish. I have always loved it despite itsbeing difficult to taste when young. Made in beautiful hillside vineyards outside of Naples. Aglianico and Piedirosso.
