The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, crisp stone fruit, pastry cream and honeycomb. Full-bodied, ample and layered, it's satiny, concentrated and multidimensional, with lively acids and a long, saline finish. This cuvée is going from strength to strength.
A slightly riper mix features notes of both white and yellow peach, acacia blossom and plenty of exotic spice nuances, and in particular jasmine. The sleek, intense and beautifully precise broad-shouldered flavors deliver stunningly good length on the compact and superbly well-balanced finale. This is presently very, very backward, which is just as well as more depth does need to develop but that shouldn't be an issue if at least some forbearance is exercised. Assuming this stunner of a Bâtard fulfills its potential, the word brilliant comes to mind.
50% new wood, 13.3% alcohol. Pale primrose colour. Impressive fruit volume on the nose without feeling over opulent. The wood is perfectly integrated. Develops well in the glass, but with classic Morey-Coffinet restraint. The full depth of flavour is only just apparent on the palate until the finish. Excellent acidity. Not a blockbuster but a fine Bâtard-Montrachet.
