Vinedo Chadwick

In the 1940s, Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz bought the large 300-hectare Viña San José de Tocornal domain including vineyards in the Alto Maipo Valley. The Errázuriz name is certainly not unknown, because this family also runs the world famous winery Viña Errázuriz.

Beside his love for (wine) plantations, Alfonso also had a passion for polo. He has been the captain of the Chilean national team for many years and has won several open championships. So, it was no surprise that when he bought the estate, he had his own polo field built as well. The vineyards and the domain were later divided and sold, but the house and the 25 hectares with Alfonso's former polo field on it are still owned by the Chadwick Errázuriz family.

In 1992, the old polo field was planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot vines. The wine made from these grapes is named Vinedo Chadwick, after Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz. The vines enjoy a morning breeze from the mountains. This creates the right conditions and allows the grapes to ripen perfectly. The vineyard is cultivated in a sustainable way, with natural resources. The harvest is done in several rounds, so that only the best bunches are picked. The grapes are then fermented in stainless steel or concrete tanks. Three quarters of the juice is then matured in new barriques for 22 months. The other part matures in large, old foudres during that time.

The result is a deep ruby-red wine with concentrated fruit aromas of blueberries and plums, as well as aromas of tobacco, coffee, chocolate and cedar wood. A wine with a lot of depth. It is the first Chilean wine to achieve 100 points from wine critic James Suckling. The vintage 2014 will therefore be remembered as a historic and iconic wine!
