Serge Valentin (93)

Colour: pure gold.

Nose: much more complex. There sure is lots of citrus, passion fruit etc., but there’s also lots of beeswax, sea air, flowers and plants, accompanied by all their sub-aromas. Propolis, tar, shoe polish, apricot jam, ripe mirabelle, pineapple liqueur, dried figs. Then it goes back to some ‘resinous’ aromas, like old turpentine… This is just endless. What a beauty! Wait, now I have a walk in the forest under the rain. Fern, mushrooms, humus… It would have been simpler – and quicker - to write down all the aromas you can’t find in this whisky. Let’s move on...

Mouth: rather bold attack, with quite some tannins right at the start, but they are soon to get replaced by some wax, eucalyptus, old books… A little dusty and, to be honest, tired. There is almost no point in rating the palate, this malt stands just by its nose. And what a nose!

Bowmore 1957: A Timeless Gem of Distinction

In the world of whisky, few things capture the imagination quite like a rare and aged vintage. Bowmore 1957 is one such treasure, a whisky that embodies the essence of time and craftsmanship. Distilled on the 14th of January 1957, this exceptional expression has journeyed through the decades, carefully nurtured and protected, to become one of the most sought-after releases from the renowned Bowmore Distillery.

A Legacy of Patience and Dedication

From the moment it was distilled, the spirit within casks numbered 216-220 was destined for greatness. Bowmore's Distillery Manager recognized the unique potential of this batch and diligently watched over it as it matured in the hallowed No. 1 Vaults. Over the course of 38 years, the whisky developed its character, absorbing the sea air and the essence of the distillery itself.

Preserving History and Ensuring Perfection

As the whisky approached its 40th year, a critical milestone in maturation, the Distillery Manager made the crucial decision to bottle it. With just 861 bottles in existence, each one holds a piece of history. The urgency was driven by the realization that any delay could lead to the whisky falling below the required 40% alcohol volume strength, rendering it unfit to be called Scotch whisky.

Meticulous Craftsmanship and Presentation

The precious liquid was carefully bottled and housed in a bespoke oak presentation case, crafted by the skilled hands of the Master Cabinet Makers of Charles Kirkby & Sons in Sheffield, England. This handmade oak case adds an extra touch of elegance and highlights the exclusivity of this exceptional whisky.

A Timeless Experience

Bowmore 1957, with its unique autumnal color, demands to be savored and appreciated. It rewards those who take the time to allow it to breathe in the glass, revealing its character and depth. The decision not to chill filter this whisky ensures that every nuance and subtlety of flavor is preserved. Adding a drop of water may even enhance its complexity, unveiling a soft haze that further showcases its natural beauty.

A Rare Gem in the Bowmore Family

With only 861 bottles ever produced, Bowmore 1957, aged 38 years, holds an esteemed place among whisky collectors and connoisseurs. It represents a pinnacle of excellence, a testament to the artistry and dedication of the Bowmore Distillery. Opening a bottle of Bowmore 1957 is like opening a portal to the past, allowing one to savor a moment in time that can never be replicated.

Conclusion

Bowmore 1957 is not just a whisky; it is a testament to the legacy of Bowmore Distillery and the craftsmanship that goes into creating exceptional spirits. This rare and aged vintage stands as a symbol of dedication, patience, and the art of whisky-making. As you savor each precious drop, remember that you are experiencing a piece of history, encapsulated in a bottle that is truly a gem among whiskies.
