The best wines from Penedes

Penedès is a prominent and the largest of Catalonia's 11 DOS. Its winemaking history traces back to the 7th century when Phoenician sailors planted Chardonnay, later enhanced by Roman influence. It’s known for its cava and the region is also famous for still white wines, particularly made from Xarello, Chardonnay, and Malvasia de Sitges. Red wines are made from Garnatxa, Samsó, Ull de Llebre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Monastrell.

Penedès comprises three zones: Alt Penedès, Medio Penedès, and Penedès Marítimo. These areas vary in elevation and climate, resulting in diverse landscapes and distinct wine styles. The region which initially focused on red varieties, adapted to white wines post-phylloxera outbreak

Its strategic location near Barcelona with its harbour facilitates export, in the past as in current times.

The terroir of Penedes wines

Penedès benefits from a warm and mild Mediterranean climate. Rainfall is generally low, especially in the lower areas, while the higher inland Alt Penedès receives more rain (about 650 mm/year) with more pronounced day-night temperature differences.

The region has a sunny summer and a mild winter, with medium to high temperatures from May to October. Its proximity to the sea brings humidity and refreshing sea breezes, with rainfall mainly occurring after harvest in autumn and winter. These conditions contribute to an optimal condition for quality winemaking.

Classifications of Penedes wines

Penedès holds the DO Penedès appellation for red, white, and rosé wines, focusing on international and Catalan grape varieties. Within the framework of the DO Cava are premium wines crafted from individual grape varieties, amongst others traditional sparkling wines, reminiscent of Champagne. DO Penedès Espumoso produces organic sparkling wines, exclusively using organic grapes, making it the world's first appellation dedicated solely to organic sparkling wine.
