The herbal 2015 Mas La Plana is one of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignons from Spain. It's sleek and polished, with varietal character intermixed with a Mediterranean side. The palate is medium to full-bodied with the fine-grained and elegant textbook tannins of the variety. This is from a warm and dry year, and the wine is ripe and powerful but in the Torres style, which is always nicely crafted, balanced and polished.
A complex wine that has plenty of ripe red-plum and blueberry notes that lead to a palate that offers a chalky, modern and fresh array of ripe plums and berries with assertive, spicy oak.
Full bottle 1,295 g. Cabernet Sauvignon from a 29-ha property where it is the dominant variety. A wine whose 1970 did extremely well in the 1979 international rerun of the Judgment of Paris. 2015 was dry but not excessively hot. Harvest was from 1 October (so the site must be pretty high). Tank fermentation and maceration lasted 15–25 days including a seven-day fermentation. Aged for 18 months in French oak (85% new) and bottled in September 2017.
Transparent ruby. Warm, mellow, well-melded tertiary aromas on the nose. Good freshness on the finish as well as the ripe fruit. Nothing like a bordeaux – softer and sweeter initially with much less aggressive tannin – and why should it be? Very mellifluous. Lovely drinking now with the lightest hint of spearmint and some herbal quality. Great to have such mellowness so soon. Not great value but not an outrageous price for a historic wine that can provide this much pleasure. (JR)
Opaque ruby. Black and blue fruits, cherry cola and subtle herb, vanilla and floral notes on the spice-tinged nose. Taut and sharply focused, offering very good depth and sappy bitter cherry, cassis and licorice flavors that become sweeter on the back half. Chewy tannins frame the impressively long, energetic finish, which echoes the cherry and floral notes.
