This is one of Burgundy’s greatest domaines in any perspective. The estate’s properties and quality of their wines is just legendary. The original Armand Rousseau was a trend setter in bottling his wines at the domaine in the 1930’s.
Today Eric, who is the grandson of Armand, is taking care of both the vineyards and the cellar. In principle, he is farming organically. Only the from time to time used anti-disease spray contains chemicals. In 2014 his daughter Cyrielle joind her father in the management of the Domaine.
The three top wines from Domaine Armand Rousseau; Le Chambertin Grand Cru (2.56 Ha), Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (1.42 Ha) and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru “Clos St.-Jacques” (2.22 Ha) are among the greatest and finest examples in Burgundy. But also, the rest of the portfolio is of great consistency and quality nowadays. However, the style of making the Rousseau wines has not changed much from the previous generations.
All the wines are coming from Gevrey-Chambertin, including the grands crus Mazis-Chambertin (0.53 Ha), Ruchottes-Chambertin “Clos des Ruchottes” (1.06 Ha) and Charmes Chambertin (1.37 Ha), except for the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (1.48 Ha), which is from the village of Morey-St.-Denis. One hundred percent new oak is used for Le Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and one hundred percent one-year-old wood for the other grands crus. For the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru “Clos St.-Jacques”, the amount of new oak varies, according to the vintage. Simply superb wines from top to bottom with remarkable depth and longevity.
