Weingut Gunther Steinmetz

Located in the heart of the Mosel, the family-run winery Weingut Günther Steinmetz has been crafting exceptional wines for generations. Nestled in the picturesque village of Brauneberg, right on the Mosel River, this winery may be less well-known than its famous neighbors Fritz Haag and Markus Molitor, but it certainly matches them in quality.

Brauneberg is one of the warmest areas in Germany. Its sunny microclimate provides ideal ripening conditions for Riesling grapes – a fact known even to the Romans. It is no coincidence that Brauneberg is home to the oldest wine presses in the Mosel region. The vineyards are located on steep slopes, some with gradients of up to 80%, making hand-picking the only feasible option.

Since 1999, Stefan Steinmetz has been at the helm of Weingut Günther Steinmetz. Together with his wife Sammie, he has introduced various new techniques while maintaining the long-standing traditions of the winery. The estate is primarily planted with old vines, cultivated organically and sustainably, without the use of fertilizers, insecticides, or herbicides. This approach respects the historic vineyards and aims to produce the purest wines possible.

In the cellar, Stefan works as naturally as possible. He avoids acid adjustments, deacidification agents, and animal-based fining agents. Natural yeasts are left to do their work in wooden and steel vats, resulting in terroir-driven wines full of finesse.

In addition to the legendary Brauneberger Juffer vineyard, the winery owns plots in Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Oligsberg, Kestener Paulinshofberg, Wintricher Geierslay, Mülheimer Sonnenlay, Dhroner Hofberg, and Veldenzer Grafschafter Sonnenberg. In total, the estate spans around 12 hectares, predominantly planted with Riesling and a small portion of Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).
