The sweet, legendary wines from Egon Müller are regarded as one of the best Riesling wines from Germany. Egon Müller stand for incredible wines of astonishing quality, such as the Egon Müller Schartzhof Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule 2015, which received a perfect score of 100 points from international reviewer Robert Parker!
The Egon Müller winery is located in the Mosel wine district, an area in which the valleys of the rivers Saar, Mosel and Ruwer are located. Covering approximately thirteen hectares of land, the Egon Müller vineyards consists of exclusively Riesling vines. The Scharzhofberg vineyard, which contains approximately nine hectares of land, is Egon Müllers largest vineyard, and is considered by many as one of the best white vineyards in the world. After the grapes have reached the right ripeness they’re manually harvested, after which they are fermented in oak wooden tanks. The wines go through a maturing process for approximately six months, after which the wines are bottled. Egon Müller’s vineyard is classified as “Grosses Gewächs”, which is the German counterpart of Grand Cru. Due to the sweet character of the wines, Egon Müller wines however aren’t classified as such.
The estate’s historical roots can be traced back as early as the late 16th century, when a farmer named Jean-Jacques Koch acquired the estate, which was a farm around that time. His daughter eventually married a man named Felix Müller. Ever since the establishment, the Egon Müller estate has remained family owned. At this moment, Egon Müller is under the leadership of Egon Müller IV, who is a graduate from the Geisenheim Wine University. As a member of the Primum Familiae Vini (PFV), which is an exclusive international wine association that consists from 12 renowned wineries, the Egon Müller family has proven to be an absolute authority in the wold of wines!
