Domaine Leroy
Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy is involved in three different enterprises in Burgundy:
1) Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanée
2) Domaine d’Auvenay, named after her home where she resides in the hills near St.-Romain
3) Maison Leroy situated in Auxey-Duresses.
Furthermore, she is the co-owner (25%) of the world-famous Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
Domaine Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay have been farmed biodynamical from the beginning and are now certified. There are ancient vines in the various vineyards because Lalou Bize-Leroy never grubs up and replants the vineyard with new vines. Therefore, she replaces individual missing vines from her own cuttings. The average yield is extremely low.
In the cellar, there is no winemaker or oenologist, because the grapes are simply perfect and they do not need a winemaker, according to Lalou!
The selection of the grapes (all selected by hand) is rigorous. All the wines are matured after fermentation in new barrels, carefully selected by Madame Bize-Leroy herself. Domaine Leroy has in its portfolio famous grands crus, such as: Le Chambertin (0.50 Ha), Le Musigny (0.27 Ha), Richebourg (0.78 Ha), Romanée St.-Vivant (0.99 Ha) and Clos de la Roche (0.67 Ha), as well as numerous other grands crus and premiers crus.
Maison Leroy is widely accepted as the “vinothèque” for some exceptional wines, a superb collection which includes several grands crus from the 1950’s until now.
As we mentioned before, domaine d’Auvenay is named for the property where Lalou Bize-Leroy lives. There are some superb vineyards in this portfolio, but unfortunately the quantities of the wines produced are minuscule. Examples from Domaine d’Auvenay are: (white) Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (0.16 Ha) and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (0.06 Ha), (red) Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (0.26 Ha) and Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru (0.26 Ha). Prices are amongst the highest in Burgundy and the wines are capable to last a lifetime.
