This family owned domaine is situated in the small village of Vosne-Romanée in the Côte d’Or wine region of Burgundy, France. It was established by Sylvain’s grandfather in the 1930’s who used to work at prestigious domaines such as Domaine la Romanée-Conti and Lamarche.
Sylvain’s father André Cathiard came in charge of the domaine in 1969 and in 1979, after finishing his study at the “Lycée Viticole”in Beaune, Sylvain joined his father in the vineyards. In 1984 Sylvain Cathiard founded his own domaine by renting parcels of vines from André and other winegrowers.
Ten years later, in 1994, he took over the original vineyards owned by his father. From 2006 on, his son Sébastien became involved in the family business as well. The domaine has 5.5 Ha of vineyards in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits St. Georges and Chambolle-Musigny and they are all planted with Pinot Noir vines. Most of the vineyards are of 1er Cru level, but the domaine also owns a very small parcel of the Grand Cru “Romanée-Saint-Vivant”, just enough to produce 3 barrels.
Other important sites are the Vosne-Romanée 1er Crus “Les Suchots”, “Aux Malconsorts”, “Aux Reignots” and “En Orveaux”. The domaine uses 100% new oak barrels for their Premier and Grand Cru wines and 50% new oak for the rest of their portfolio.
Because of the small production and the exceptional quality, the wines from Domaine Sylvain Cathiard are extremely rare, highly sought after and they command high prices on the international wine market.
