Like most Magdelaines, this wine builds in increments rather than blasts from the glass. A worthy rival to the great 1998, the 2000 Magdelaine has a deep ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of mulberries, black currants, and jammy cherry notes intermixed with mineral, licorice, and a hint of subtle toast. This wine is sweet, expansive, and dense, with the gorgeous fruit hiding some relatively elevated tannin.
This is classy, offering alluring mulled plum and blackberry fruit notes lined with charcoal-edged tannins that soften nicely through the tobacco leaf— and black tea—infused finish. There's still some briary energy here too, so while lovely now, there's no rush.
Rene Gabriel rates this wine 18/20 points.
