Serge Valentin (88)

Pure Bourbon? Let’s bring the house down! Colour: pale gold. Nose: this one is a bit more ‘neutral’ at first nosing and more marked by vanilla as well, but the general profile is quite similar. Less oily/waxy and rounder, but the resinous notes are soon to appear, as well as very great whiffs of crushed parsley and chives, dill, hints of pepper and wasabi. Also hints of pears and fur (chinchilla coat – whatever). Mouth: it’s much closer to the 1974 now, even if probably even bigger. Pepper, oak, vanilla, dried pears, almond skins and strong green tea. A certain harshness. Finish: long, bitterer now, with the oak’s sharpness lingering for a long time. Well, these two Magdas weren’t sexy at all but sometimes we do need a little... austerity in our whiskies, don’t we

Linlithgow 25 Years Old Mission Gold

In the realm of rare and exceptional whiskies, the Linlithgow 25 Years Old Mission Gold, distilled in 1982 and bottled in 2007 by the independent bottler Murray McDavid for the Mission Gold series, is a true gem. With a distinct maturation journey in a Bourbon cask and a Cognac cask finish, this expression promises a symphony of flavors and elegance that sets it apart in the world of Scotch whisky.

Maturation and Finish:
The Linlithgow 25 begins its story in a Bourbon cask, where it spends a quarter of a century absorbing the essence of its surroundings. But the narrative takes a fascinating turn as it receives a Cognac cask finish, imparting an additional layer of complexity and sophistication. This dual maturation process becomes the foundation for the unique character that unfolds with each pour.

Nose:
The olfactory journey begins with a deep and inviting aroma. Deep pongy cream, creamy fruit puree, and set yoghurt create a luscious introduction. The exotic notes of mango curry, nan, and popadoms evoke a culinary adventure, accompanied by an array of pickles and the fragrance of banana leaves and banana blossom. The presence of white bananas adds a tropical twist, making the nose a vibrant and aromatic experience.

Taste:
Upon the first sip, the Linlithgow 25 reveals its layers of complexity. The palate suggests the influence of Old Bottle Effect (OBE), presenting an old, soft, and thin texture that caresses the taste buds. A symphony of flavors unfolds—soft citrusy toffee, malt loaf, and a savoury-sweet sherry funk reminiscent of balloon rubber. In the middle, the whisky transforms into a beautiful creamy malt, honeyed and oozing into the comforting warmth of white toasted bread.

Finish:
The journey concludes with a short yet profile-faithful finish. The exquisite softness of the old malt, aged in bourbon casks and enhanced by the embrace of ex-cognac oak, lingers on the palate, leaving a lasting impression that echoes the complexity and refinement of this exceptional expression.

Conclusion:
The Linlithgow 25 Years Old Mission Gold stands as a testament to the artistry of independent bottlers like Murray McDavid. This Scotch whisky is not just a drink; it's a sensory experience that transcends time and tradition. From the enticing nose to the intricate palate and the lingering finish, every aspect of this expression speaks to the meticulous craftsmanship involved in its creation. For those who seek sophistication and a symphony of flavors, the Linlithgow 25 is a rare and delightful treasure waiting to be savored.
