Tenuta di Trinoro

The vineyards of Tenuta di Trinoro can be found in Tuscany, about 30 kilometers south of Montepulciano. In 1992, Andrea Franchetti fulfilled his dream and founded the winery. The estate covers 200 hectares and is located near the border of the provinces of Umbria and Lazio.

The vineyards have a high density of plants. As many as 10,000 vines are planted per hectare. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of between 450 and 600 meters above sea level. The soil consists of calcareous clay, which is a suitable soil for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Merlot and petit verdot are also used extensively. Yields per hectare are deliberately kept low to ensure that the grapes that stay on the vine can still ripen well.

The wines are produced in a natural way; no filtering, vegan clarification and as much use of natural yeasts as possible. The fermentation starts in stainless steel tanks. Part of the juice is then aged in French oak. The maturation period lasts 11 months on average. The wines are mainly blends, but he also makes some monocépages, such as the Palazzi cuvée of 100% merlot. Since the Chianti regulations are not met, the wines are classified as IGT. So, these are Super Tuscan wines!

In 2002, Jancis Robinson used these words to describe Andrea and his winery: “Andrea Franchetti doesn't have to prove anything anymore. He is the Yves Saint Laurent of Tuscan viticulture”. I think that says it all!
