Castello di Ama

The Ama estate dates back to pre-Roman times and is of Etruscan origin. During the Roman Empire, the estate belonged to the Firidolfi family. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed in the 15th century during an invasion of the Chianti area. The castle was eventually rebuilt with the same materials. The castle’s subsequent owners started planting vines, and so Castello di Ama was created. The labels and logo are inspired by Gian Carozzi’s artwork, depicting the knight from Guidoriccio da Foglia's.

The winery has 75 hectares of vines in use, and this area is divided over several plots. The vineyards are between 420 and 540 meters above sea level. The main grape varieties planted are Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Mero and Malvasia Nera. An average of 300,000 bottles per year are produced, both Chianti Classico and IGT wines. A total of twelve different wines are brought to market. The main Chianti Classico wines are Ama, Montebuoni and Castello di Ama Riserva. The most important IGT wines are Haiku, L'apparita and Il Chiuso. In addition, the winery also produces a Vin Santo, the famous Tuscan sweet wine.

The grape bunches are rigorously selected, several times. After a cold soak of several days, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks. The red wines are then aged in oak barrels, the duration of which varies per year and per cuvée. The wines are characterized as complex and elegant wines with a spicy aftertaste. Besides, all wines are gastronomically versatile.

In 2005, the winery was named Winery of the Year by Gambero Rosso. This is not without reason, because the wines of Castello di Ama are of high quality. The best vintages are: 1985, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
