Wines from Pio Cesare

Pio Cesare

The story of winery Pio Cesare goes back to the year 1881. In that year, Cesare Pio decided to establish a winery in the heart of the city of Alba, Italy. The idea was actually to produce a small amount of Barolo and Barbaresco for himself and his family. This plan eventually grew into a high-quality wine company with many fans worldwide.

By now, the fifth generation is at the helm of the winery, but the old traditions still play an important role in the cellar. The family owns 70 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards have been selected for their properties and characteristics.

The wine cellar is located in the historic centre of Alba. There are only a few wineries that have their cellars here. The wine cellar was built at the end of the 18th century, but the surrounding ancient walls date back to Roman times. Very unique! The winery is made up of four different levels, one of which is even lower than the Tanaro River. As a result, the temperature and humidity naturally stay at a constant level.

Both fermentation and maturation take place in oak barrels made of Slavonian wood. The duration depends on the specific wine. Since several years ago, the wines are no longer pumped around, but gravity is used instead. As there is no pump involved, the wines are more elegant and the flavours are better preserved. At Pio Cesare, they produce just under twenty different wines. They are all produced in the traditional way and are all of high quality.

Pio Cesare is a winery with a wonderful history and it is an icon when it comes to classic Barolos and Barbarscos. All wines have already achieved several scores of 90 points or higher! Out of these, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 are the exceptional years.
