Elena Fucci's latest release is the 2012 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo. The wine shines bright with primary aromas of dark fruit, herb, oak spice and dark volcanic tones of crushed granite and smoke. Given the proven track record of this wine, I'd expect this vintage to age for 15 to 20 years without a hitch. The 2012 vintage was only slightly warmer than average and those ripe fruit flavors do a lot to round out and soften the firm tannic backbone of the wine. There's a notable point of acidity that helps the wine to achieve an impressive sense of balance. Elena Fucci has another successful edition of Titolo for us to enjoy over the years to come.

Firm tannins support a palate brimming with ripe black cherry and plum sauce flavors, accented by fresh brown bread, grilled herb, espresso and graphite-tinged mineral details. Supple and mouthwatering, showing good focus through to the lingering, well-spiced finish.

Elena Fucci makes but one wine and this is it. Because all her effort goes into that single product with the same consistency and approach, year after year, Titolo is the perfect benchmark wine for Aglianico ageability. The winemaking process has remained the same: Titolo ages in new and used 225-liter French oak for 12 months and rests in bottle for an additional year before release. Only one-third of that oak is new. Her production has soared from 5,950 bottles in 2000 to 19,800 bottles in 2012. Titolo is the name of the area in the township of Barile where her six hectares of vineyards are located. Sixty- and 70-year-old vines are planted 600 meters above sea level, benefitting from excellent diurnal temperature shifts on volcanic soils. She opts for extremely low yields and usually picks the late-harvest Aglianico grape at the end of October or beginning of November for optimal tannin ripeness. I cannot exaggerate how impressed I am by her wines. Each one is a masterpiece in its own right. The 2012 scores 94 points and is now starting te show its best. For only 29.95 euro (ex VAT) a no-brainer...

From magnum. Lustrous mid ruby. Cherry-laced palate with savoury, exotic, spice notes and liquorice. Gorgeous freshness and bite and length. Wonderful vibrant stuff.?
