Meo Camuzet

Domaine Méo-Camuzet is an estate of world class, based in the village of Vosne-Romanée in the Côte d’Or (Burgundy).

The name has been derived from two influential men. The first is: Etienne Camuzet (1867 – 1946), who bought some significant vineyard plots and the famous Château de Clos de Vougeot, which he later donated to the “Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin”. The other person is Jean Méo (from 1927), a nephew of Etienne Camuzet and he acquired the domaine in 1959.

The vineyards were at that time looked after by various sharecroppers and the wine was sold off in bulk. One of those sharecroppers was the legendary Henri Jayer, who put the 1er Cru “Cros Parantoux” on the map! (The contract with the last sharecropper ended in 2007).

In 1981 the Domaine Camuzet became Domaine Méo-Camuzet and the first domaine-bottled wines were from 1983. Since 1989 Jean-Nicolas Méo, the son of Jean Méo, has been in charge of the domaine, but in the very beginning, it was not certain that he would follow the footsteps of his predecessor. With the help from his father and the genuine advice from the previously mentioned Henri Jayer, Jean-Nicolas started to create his own methods in vinifying the wines.

Most of the vineyards are farmed organically and the wines are matured in barrel, selected from tonnelier François Frères. The domaine nowadays owns over five Ha of splendid Grands Crus plots and eight Ha of Premiers Crus, mainly in Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. In 2003, Jean-Nicolas also started (together with his sisters) a “société de négoce” or trading company, called Méo-Camuzet Frères et Soeurs, to extend the array of wines with some more accessible variants and to meet the high demand.

The top wines from Domaine Méo-Camuzet are: Richebourg Grand Cru (0.34 Ha), Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Cros Parantoux” (0.30 Ha) and Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Les Brûlées” (0.72 Ha).
