Domaine du Clos des Lambrays

Domaine des Lambrays – Clos des Lambrays

The very first reference of “Clos des Lambrays” dates back to the 14th century, when the archives of the Abbey of Citeaux reveal its founding around 1365. There is also an engraved milestone, still standing in its original location, which commemorates the founding.

Domaine des Lambrays and the Clos des Lambrays are both situated in the small village of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte d’Or département of Burgundy. Although the walled vineyard of Clos des lambrays was always considered a Grand Cru, it finally received its recognition in 1981 when it was promoted as the 33rd Grand Cru of Burgundy.

The total surface area of the vineyard comprises 8.84 Ha. 8.66 Ha is owned by the Domaine de Lambrays and 0.18 Ha is owned by Domaine Taupenot-Merme, so Domaine des Lambrays doesn’t have the monopole of the vineyard.

Clos des Lambrays is exclusively planted with Pinot Noir grapevines which are on an average of over 40 years old (some old vines are even 70+ years). The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, from which 50% are new and in good vintages the wine is able to keep for decades.

Always elegant and refined, the wine truly expresses its terroir. The “second wine” from the Clos des Lambrays is the Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru “Les Loups”, produced from the younger vines of the vineyard. In 2014 the LVMH group acquired the Domaine des Lambrays. Other wines produced by Domaine des Lambrays are 2 Premier Crus from Puligny-Montrachet and made from Chardonnay: “Clos du Cailleret” and “Les Folatières” and a red “village wine” from Morey-Saint-Denis.

Top vintages for the Clos des Lambrays are: 1921, 1937, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1955, 1962, 1971, 1978, 1985, 1990, 1999, 2002, 2005 and 2010.
