Chateau Angelus

Château Angélus, formerly known as Château L’Angélus (until 1990) this château is situated near the town of St.-Emilion, on the right bank of the Bordeaux area. The name Angélus is derived from a piece of land where the Angélus bells can be heard ringing simultaneously from three local churches.

The vineyards of Angélus were added by the de Boüard de Laforest family to their already existing small estate in 1920 and 1926. The estate has currently 23.4 Ha of vines planted which consist of Merlot (51%), Cabernet Franc (47%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (2%). The wine from Château Angélus was already classified as a “Grand Cru Classé” in the 50’s, but was promoted to “Premier Grand Cru Classé B” in 1996 and even “Premier Grand Cru Classé A” in 2012.

There are only four “Premier grand Cru Classé A” wines in the St.-Emilion classification nowadays. At present, Château Angélus is run by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, together with Thierry Grenié de Boüard, while her father Hubert de Boüard-Laforest remains as a co-director and consultant.

The style of the Grand Vin can be described as deeply colored and very intense, with enjoyable fruit aromas, freshness and smooth tannins. The wine is aged in new oak for approximately 18 months and there is no fining, nor filtration. The annual production is about 75.000 bottles.

They also produce a second wine (Le Carillon d’Angélus, since 1987) and even a third wine (No. 3 d’Angélus). The legendary vintages of Château Angélus are: 1899 (the oldest bottle kept at their cellar), 1953, 1985, 1990, 2000, 2005, 2010 en 2016

In 2012 the Château designed a special bottle to celebrate the promotion to “Premier Grand Cru Classé A”. For the movie lovers: bottles of Château Angélus also appeared in two James Bond movies; “Casino Royal” and “Spectre”.
