Wines from Chateau Bastor-Lamontagne

Chateau Bastor-Lamontagne

Château Bastor-Lamontagne is a historic estate located in Preignac, Bordeaux, that boasts a 50-hectare vineyard in the AOC Sauternes. The vineyards are cultivated with organic farming principles, certified by AB since 2016, and have also been certified as sustainable level 3 by HVE since 2020, as well as ISO-14001 certified. The Helfrich family, from Grands Chais de France, has owned the château since 2018.

The winemaker, Margaux Reeder, produces seven wines, including the Les Remparts de Bastor-Lamontagne (the second wine) and the white dry wine Château Bastor-Lamontagne Bordeaux Blanc Sec. The vineyards are mainly planted with Sémillon (80 percent), Sauvignon Blanc (17 percent), Sauvignon Gris (2 percent), and Muscadelle (1 percent), with a density of 7,000 vines per hectare. The harvesting is done exclusively by hand, and the grapes are allocated as 30 percent for the 1st wine, 40 percent for the 2nd wine, and 30 percent for the SO Sauternes.

The fermentation process is carried out separately for each plot, and the alcoholic fermentation takes place in barrels for two weeks, followed by stopping the fermentation with a minimal dose of sulfur. The wines are then matured for 12 months in clean oak barrels, with 30 percent of new wood used each year.

Château Bastor-Lamontagne has a rich history dating back to the 15th century when it was a royal property. In 1711, Vincent de La Montaigne, a councillor at the Bordeaux Parliament, purchased the domain. The estate changed hands several times until it was sold to the Helfrich family in 2018.

Overall, Château Bastor-Lamontagne is a notable winery that produces powerful, well-balanced, and perfectly concentrated wines, with a long and fascinating history.
