Wines from Chateau Kirwan

Chateau Kirwan

Established in Margaux, the southernmost district in Médoc in France, Château Kirwan is classified as a Troisièmes Crus (Third Growths) regarding to the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification. One of the most sought-after vintages from this winery is the Château Kirwan 2009, a gorgeous and fierce Margaux wine which is best described for its aromas of raspberries, cassis and spring flowers!

The 37 hectares estate of Château Kirwan is made up from 35 different plots, provided with predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon vines, followed by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The vines are manually harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks, after which the wine matures for approximately 18 months in 40 percent new French oak casks. At last the wine is slightly filtrated, until it is finally bottled.

Château Kirwan produces two distinctive wines. The most renowned is the full-bodied Château Kirwan, which is produced by mature vines growing on a gravel and clay soil type. The second wine was introduced in 1993, and carries the name Charmes de Kirwan. This vintage is produced with a less mature grape variant growing on a sandy soil type, which contributes to the light and fruity taste of the Château Kirwan wine.

Château Kirwan was acquired by Mark Kirwan in 1760, who took over the property from his father-in-law John Collingwood. After the château changed ownership a couple of times it was acquired by the firm Schröder and Schÿler in 1925, a family business since the early 18th century. Jean-Henri Schÿler joined the company as his father’s successor in 1960 and invested a lot of effort to the expansion of Château Kirwan. On 31 October 2016 Jean-Henri Schÿler passed away at the age of 85, passing on the legacy of the family business and Château Kirwan to his three children.
