Wines from Weingut Prager

Weingut Prager

Weingut Prager is located in Austria's Wachau along the banks of the Danube River. The Prager family has reportedly owned vineyards since 1715. The winery in its current form was founded in the 1980s by Franz Prager. Today, the winery is run by Franz daughter Ilse Prager and her husband Toni Bodenstein, but their son Robert Bodenstein can also be found in the cellar on a regular basis.

The vineyard area comprises 18.5 hectares in the area of Weissenkirchen and Dürnstein. This area is divided into 13 different plots with 9 typical terroirs. The best known of these are: Achleiten, Kaiserberg, Zwerithaler, Klaus and Hollerin. The vines here are on steep terraces and only riesling and grüner veltliner are planted. Toni is not considered the riesling terroirist of Wachau for nothing. His motto is 'vom Stein zum Wein', referring to the tricky stony soil on which the vines grow.

Harvesting can only be done by hand because the slopes are so steep that no machine can drive. Once in the cellar, vinification proceeds as naturally as possible with a focus on expressing Wachau's special terroir. Toni produces 12 different cuvées, including two federspiel and nine emerald wines. The wines are fermented and matured only in stainless steel tanks, so they retain their pure and mineral character well. The wines are very elegant and refined and are among the best in Wachau. In addition, they have excellent storage potential.

Weingut Prager's best vintages are: 1990, 1994, 2018 and 2020.
