Serge Valentin (83)

Colour: straw.

Nose: clean and very ‘natural’. Apple pie, candy sugar, butterscotch and touches of malt, with some kind of coastal freshness and wee notes of sherry flying around. More pears and orange blossom after a few minutes, maybe roses. Easy and uncomplicated, but elegant.

Mouth: easy, fruity, maybe even a tad sugary (icing sugar). Oranges, maple syrup, barley sugar and vanilla. Oily mouth feel, almost syrupy, maybe from American oak.

Finish: pretty long, with more spices from some active wood. Ginger and touches of curry and white pepper. A little burnt caramel in the aftertaste.

Comments: very all right, sweet and easily sippable ‘just like that’.

Gal Granov (87)

Gal Granov:

Nose : Smooth and aromatic. Sweet malt. Sandalwood , fruit – a bit on the exotic fruit: Lychee, Pineapple, Papaya. All engulfed with creamy sweet nectar. Very good!

Palate : Lovely. Baked apples. Creamy. Oily. Lots of vanilla. Buttery feel to it with pepper and some citrus. This is definitely an Arran.

Finish: Fruit. Bitter dark chocolate. Medium to long.

Arran Icons of Arran No.4: The Golden Eagle - A Whisky Tribute to Nature's Majesty

Nestled on the picturesque Isle of Arran, the Arran Distillery is known for its commitment to crafting exceptional single malt Scotch whisky. Among its many offerings, the Icons of Arran series stands as a testament to the distillery's dedication to both the art of whisky-making and the natural beauty of the island. The fourth installment of this series, "The Golden Eagle," is a true masterpiece, with whisky distilled in 1999, bottled in 2012, and matured in a harmonious blend of 14 Ex-Bourbon barrels and 7 Sherry hogsheads. This expression is not only a tribute to the distillery's craftsmanship but also a nod to the majestic birds that call Arran home.

Isle of Arran: A Haven of Natural Beauty

Before delving into the whisky itself, it's essential to appreciate the backdrop against which this spirit is crafted. The Isle of Arran, often referred to as "Scotland in Miniature," is a place of stunning natural beauty, boasting rugged mountains, pristine beaches, and diverse ecosystems. Among the island's treasures are its golden eagles, iconic birds of prey that soar high above Arran's peaks and valleys.

The Icons of Arran Series

The Icons of Arran series pays homage to the unique features of the island, and "The Golden Eagle" is no exception. As the fourth release in this collection, it celebrates not only the island's wildlife but also the harmony between the natural environment and the art of whisky-making.

Aged to Perfection

"The Golden Eagle" features whisky that was distilled in 1999, signifying over a decade of patient maturation. This extended aging process allowed the spirit to interact with both Ex-Bourbon barrels and Sherry hogsheads, resulting in a symphony of flavors that reflect the island's diverse landscape.

Tasting Notes

Upon nosing "The Golden Eagle," one is greeted by the inviting aroma of vanilla, honey, and toasted oak, courtesy of the Ex-Bourbon barrels. Beneath these notes lies a rich layer of dried fruits, spices, and a hint of cocoa, a gift from the Sherry hogsheads.

Taking a sip of this exquisite Arran whisky reveals a complex and balanced palate. The vanilla and honey sweetness dances gracefully with the rich, nutty qualities imparted by the Sherry casks. The dried fruits and gentle spices intertwine, creating a flavorful journey that reflects the island's diverse terrain and the harmony of its natural surroundings.

With its 46% ABV, "The Golden Eagle" possesses a lingering finish that invites contemplation, much like watching the majestic birds of prey soaring high above the Arran landscape.
