Pingus

Dominio de Pingus is a small “cult” domaine in the Ribera del Duero region in Spain, established by the Danish oenologist Peter Sisseck in 1995. He uses 100% Tempranillo (aka Tinto Fino) from very old vines, which were never treated with pesticides.

The flagship wine of the estate, named “Pingus”, was first released in 1995. Only 325 cases were produced that year, but the wine immediately received top ratings from the various wine critics. In 2000, Dominio de Pingus moved to biodynamic farming, a logical decision since the vineyards were already organically farmed.

The annual average production of “Pingus”, now reaches approximately 500 cases, but in poor vintages, no “Pingus” will be produced. “Pingus” is one of the most expensive wines from Spain and highly sought after. The 2004 and 2012 vintages both received the perfect score (100 points) from Robert Parker and will cost you € 800 or more!

The second wine produced at the domaine is called “Flor de Pingus” and is available on the wine market for less than € 100. Its annual production is 4000 cases and the wine is also made from 100% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) grapes which are farmed biodynamical as well.

A very rare wine is called “Amelia” a single barrel cuvée and not produced in every vintage. Although the price is lower than “Pingus” itself, only 25- 30 cases are produced from 100+ year old vines from one parcel. The first release of “Amelia” was in 2003 and only 5 vintages were released so far.

The last wine produced is the “PSI”, which is a project to help local growers and to save the old Tempranillo vines planted throughout the region. The wine is vinified by Peter Sisseck and the first vintage was 2007. Production of this wine is well over 10.000 cases.
