After the heavy dram of yesterday, today's dram is much lighter. Already Scotland is showing its versatile character with these two extremes. This next dram is from the Lowlands, one of the newer distilleries in the Lowlands. The distillery started back in 2017 with their first release amidst the Covid-19 epidemic in 2021. There is nothing to be ashamed of if you haven't heard of this distillery before, but we personally think that the price-quality level, as well as the excellent drinkability make this a whisky you probably won't easily forget either.
COLOURPale to straw gold, about as light as yesterday's dram.
NOSE
A beautiful freshness emerges in the nose with aromas of citrus, freshly baked apple pie and lemon curd. Behind this fruitiness a wonderful bouquet of white flowers and rolled oats intertwine with aromas of oak.
PALATE
The freshness in the nose developes into a more herbal and grainy whisky with more of the white flowers, but also offering hints of hops, honeysuckle and some green herbs. Flavours of lychee, oranges and a quirky note of goldenberries make up the fruity layer, ending with a hint of white pepper for a spicy finish.
FINISH
Especially in the finish the whisky really develops. The spiciness given by the pepper offers a lingering spicy sensation that leaves room for more herbs and spices to be tasted in the finish. It is almost as if a whole new layer of flavours emerge from this finish, while all it does is put some more attention to the already present layers in the whisky.
CONCLUSION
Since this was a rather unknown distillery, amazing job if you correctly guessed Lindores Abbey! The region should not have been too hard to guess for most contestants. The combination of white flowers, citrus fruit, apples and baked cake, along with notes of honey, cereal an hints of vanilla would lead you to Lowlands. Though you might find these notes in Highland whiskies as well, the freshness of this whisky made this dram a textbook Lowlands. Aged only 4 years, the whisky does show an amazing ripeness for its age! The 60.1% alcohol gives the whisky quite some warmth.
