Mezcal Nucano a 100% artisanal mezcal from the San Dionisio Ocotepec region of the state of Oaxaca.

The term “mezcal” originates from Mexcalli Náhuatl (“metl” maguey, “ixcalli” cooked) and means cooked maguey.

Mezcal Nucano provides the customer with an AUTHENTIC ARTISANAL MEZCAL, product of working the land in its purest and most TRADITIONAL form and available thanks to the efforts of MEN OF THE FIELD.

This UNIQUE, high QUALITY mezcal contains CULTURE and TRADITION in each bottle, aiming to connect each of its customers with the origin of this ancestral drinking, and putting a little piece of Oaxaca in their hands.
Nucano (Great Fire) was an important character in the history of Oaxaca, a brave Mixtec warrior who fell in love with the Zapotec Princess Donají, and who, in the name of that love, sought to bring peace to the two nations.

Nucano governed the Zapotecs, and did so with nobility and respect, as his beloved Donají would have done. According to the legend, their bodies lie under a flagstone in the Cuilapam de Guerrero church in Oaxaca.

Mezcal Nucano, proudly Oaxacan!

About this mezcal
Nucano Tobala is made with 100% agave Tobala in San Dionisio Ocotepec. Tobala is known as the king agave. It is much smaller than most other agave used in mezcal production, making it fairly low-yeild. It’s flavors are always complex, and Nucano uses agave Tobala that take 12 years to reach maturity.

Nucano Mezcal
Mezcal Nucano is an artisanal mezcal produced in the region of San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca. Their batches are always limited to ensure artisanal production, and they are made by a 5th generation mezcalero who helps to bring old-world mezcal production into modern times. They make an Anejo, Reposado, and several Joven mezcals that feature different silvestre agave. They are entirely Oaxacan owned and operated.

Tepextate is another wild agave, quite big I think, that grows high in the mountains. I think it’s the first time I’m trying a tepextate.

Colour: white.

Nose: very different, and rather on fresh vegetables this time. Little brine or olives or smoke, rather fresh French beans and peas this time. Organic, of course. Brilliant nose! Well, looks like I’ll have to try to distil peas one day (stay tuned!)

Mouth: very lovely, with more citrus this time, peppermint, chives, a touch of white peach, and once again not a huge mezcalness. Geranium and zucchini flowers. Excellent spirit, if not extremely earthy and, well, mezcaly.

Finish: a little short, perhaps, but very good. Rather on grapefruit and violets bonbons. Peels. Gherkins are back in the aftertaste, though (and afternose!)

Comments: a different kind of high-quality mezcal. A Rosebank of mezcal, if you like.
