Whiskies from Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie

Despite for the Glenmorangie Distillery’s relatively small-scaled production capacity, this particular Highlands whisky brand is notated in the top-five of best-selling whiskies worldwide, and was the best-selling single malt whisky in the UK for many years. Glenmorangie Single Malt Whisky is best known for its savors and scents of oak, vanilla and fruits, much loved in releases such as the rare Glenmorangie 1978 Pride Baccarat Crystal Decanter by Laurence Brabant and the Glenmorangie 18 Years old originating from the distillery’s core-range.

This distillery's tongue twisting name is pronounced as “glen-MO-ran-gy”. This derives from the Gaelic Gleann mor na sith, which means "Valley of Tranquility".

The history of the Glenmorangie Distillery started in the midst of the 18th century in the northern district of the Highlands, where a farm named the “Morangie Farm” was converted into a brewery. In 1843 the former owner of the Morangie Farm named William Matheson requested for a distilling license and converted the old farm brewery into a distillery, the Glenmorangie Distillery. Decades later, the distillery was fully renovated and the Glenmorangie Distillery Company Ltd. was founded, which on its turn was acquired in 1918 by Macdonald & Muir, a renowned Edinburgh wine- and spirits merchant. The Glenmorangie Distillery did very well under their command. Having survived both the Prohibition and the Great Depression of the early 20th century, Glenmorangie proceeded its thriving operations and increased its production capacity up to eight stills in the year 1990. And by purchasing a stunning 650 acres of estate around the adjacent Tarlogie Spring, Macdonald & Muir secured the distillery's future supply of fresh water for distilling Glenmorangie Single Malt Whisky.

Producing approximately 6 million liters of pure alcohol per annum, the Glenmorangie Distillery has remained one of the most producing distilleries in the world, under the thriving command of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy.
